Not so Good!
Reviewed on 2024-02-25 by , Lexington, SC United StatesIt started in the elevator which was pretty beat up and not too clean. Next was the hallway going to the unit. The carpeting was worn and stained badly from years of use. The walls and doors to other units were niched, scratched and gouged.
The main living and dining area of our unit #240 was good. It had a nice view of the ocean, and the furniture was also good.
The kitchen was clean but had a very chipped up tile floor and 1 florescent bulb was burned out. The dishes and appliances were good.
They bedroom was barely ok with very stained and spotted carpeting. Lighting was minimal with 1 small table lamp.
The bathroom was bad/dirty. The baseboards had years of "stuff" stuck to them. The floor near the base boards was stained. The grout by the tub floor was missing/black. The floor around the sink cabinet was stained and dirty. The door(s) had dirt around a big area of the doorknobs.
There was some mold in places.
All in all, the area was very nice, the swimming pool and grounds well maintained, but the building interior not so good.
We will not return.

Grungy stay
Reviewed on 2022-11-24 by John P. , Glen Rock, PA United StatesWe have stayed at Surfsong for several years and always enjoyed the places we stayed. 240 is a disgrace. Sadly we were stuck with this for two weeks. Beautiful location apparently owned by a person who doesn’t care about maintaining what could be a beautiful place.
First time stay at this room. First thing you see is a broken faucet in kitchen. Bedroom carpet is matted and should have been removed ten years ago. Very disgusting. Sofa is covered with grungy looking seat covers. The room actually stinks. Bath tub is cracked and most likely leaking causing the stench in the apartment. The sliding door to the balcony is difficult to open. Seal is gone so when the wind blew it whistled. After several complaints to the front office Sunhost did refund some of our money. Sadly the people in the front office had to hear our complaints and likely many others.
We have stayed at Surfsong for several years and always enjoyed the places we stayed. 240 is a disgrace. Amazing location
Reviewed on 2022-10-31 by Steven E. , Wichita, KS United StatesOur unit was clean, but badly in need of a bit of maintenance and updating. The sliding door to the deck is in bad shape, just as it was when we stayed in the same unit in April 2021 and the kitchen faucet felt like it could fall out every time we used it. Having said that, I love the place and the price point. The people at the pool all seem to be perennial visitors and were great to visit with. I love the proximity to John's Pass with the restaurants and bars. I heard a bit of grumbling about a change in the management at the place and even from one gentleman who said that this was his last year as he was going to move down the beach next year. I have booked through Sunhost both times I stayed there and have had no problems. I don't understand the practice of charging a cleaning fee and then asking for a tip for the maid. However, I always tip the maid and would have given far more than I did if I hadn't paid the fee. I hate to sound negative, because overall I love the place and will most likely stay there again.
Aunt Edna's Trap house of horror
Reviewed on 2022-10-12 by Jacqueline S. , Pittsburgh, PA United StatesWorst vacation rental in my entire life, damp, wet, stinky unit. Horrible lighting, kitchen lights exposed, hot water dispenser ripped from sink and just left hanging, no ceiling fans and no dehumidifer, sliding glass door from 1980 that would barely open let alone lock, rain water poured in from the rot at the bottom of the door, bedroom carpet at least 20 years old filthy and wet. Couch had covers and they were stained, couch and unit in general smelled horribly. Even bought fabreeze to try and get rid of the smell. Honestly this place should not be rented one would be better driving to a drug infested neighborhood and staying in a crack house. YES it was that bad!

Location saves the day!
Reviewed on 2021-12-16 by Dawn P. , Westland, MI United StatesNegatives: The unit was not clean! When we first arrived, I dropped some ice on the floor when we were emptying our coolers. Using a white paper towel to wipe up the melted ice, it was FILTHY! I could feel the dirt on the bathroom floor, as well. Clearly the floors had not been cleaned. The carpet in the bedroom was matted and filthy. I didn't want to walk on it with bare feet. The beds are so uncomfortable that I had to sleep on the couch. The provided bath towels are paper thin and the toilet seat kept falling off! The air conditioning is difficult to manage, making the temp a constant issue. None of the appliances match (only cosmetic, but noticeable) and if you put anything on the counter, tiny ants converged on it! All of the utensils appear to be of a dollar store quality, meaning that flipping a burger was too heavy for the spatula. The provided cookware was also lower quality and scarce. In the pool area, there are no chairs IN the pool area, they are all outside the fence. Inconvenient, but not terrible. Overall, this place needs some major attention. I did not contact the desk, other than to ask how to manage the air, for which I was told if I wasn't careful I would "make the unit freeze and it would take 2 days to thaw it." We don't like people in the unit when we are away and we spend a lot of time out doing things. We decided to deal with all of the issues and not ask for service. We will be in Florida for our 7th trip in 12 months and we stay at a lot of rental condos. This was one of the worst.
Positives: The location is perfect! The balcony faces the evening sunsets and is steps away from the beach. The assigned parking is just below the unit, with the door to the stairwell right outside the entry door. The pool was nice, a perfect temperature and not crowded during our visit. John's Pass is directly across the street as well as many other fun places that are within walking distance. We had our bikes with us, but no bike rack. Bummer.
Negatives: The unit was not clean! When we first arrived, I dropped some ice on the floor when we were emptying our coolers. Great location, shabby unit
Reviewed on 2021-11-24 by Mary P. , Lexington, KY United StatesThe Surf Song is a family favorite. This was our 1st time in unit 240. It was a bit run down, the blinds on the balcony were inoperable, the balcony door was very difficult to open and nearly impossible to lock/unlock, and even though there was a receipt for exterminator service on the counter, there were small bugs around the sink and counter the entire week we were there. The unit does have a nice balcony facing directly onto the beach.

This Unit was just ok.
Reviewed on 2021-08-18 by Robert S. , Pittsburgh, PA United StatesAll in all, we really liked the resort itself, but this particular unit there were a couple issues. First, the kitchen counters had a little red ant problem. The blinds on the sliding door were very broken and falling off. The A.C. did not seem to work well. We kept it on 72 and it was pretty warm at nights trying to sleep. There was a stereo system, but it didn't work and the bedroom carpet was a bit dirty. However, the beds were clean and comfortable! Very nice view to enjoy each day. We would come back to SunHost Resorts, but not this particular unit.
Needs refurbishing
Reviewed on 2021-08-17 by Jeanette B. , Lutz, FL United StatesI love the property, the staff, and the overall location. I was NOT in love with the kitchen. The cabinets were falling apart. I felt like I had to constantly rewash my dishes as the crumbling cabinetry was falling on my dishes or silverware. On the floor, the cabinetry was falling apart, whole chunks, and I had to sweep constantly so that I or guests felt the tiny splinters/wood pieces (really particle board) For the amount I paid, over $1600 for the week, I find this inexcusable. It is just a one bedroom apartment facing the beach. Everything else in the apartment was okay, even though the couch had pillow covers on some of the cushions but not consistent on all seats. I have come here every summer for at least 20 years...the price and conditions did not match! Mind you, I am strictly talking about Room 240 at Surf Song, not Surf Song Property which I still love.
Location saved our Vacation!
Reviewed on 2021-08-09 by Tracy S. , Gretna, NE USAt that point we left, dropped our keys off and very quickly got a call from the office asking about the trash. The lady who called was at least sympathetic and polite, but needless to say it was not a great way to end our trip.
The location of this property is ideal, and perhaps other units there are in much better condition, but I would NEVER recommend a stay in unit 240.
The outside pool area and access to the beach are 2nd to none here. Unfortunately, that is where the good things end. Office was rude, said we were late at 4:45p. Other reviews commented on the Patio door, and honestly, I thought maybe people were just being picky, NOT the case. It's awful. Our children couldn't open it at all,and my friend and I literally both had sore shoulders by day 2. There was a day that it rained/stormed the majority of the day and the door howled the entire time. The furniture is very run down! There is a black leather loveseat that is missing the legs, so it sits super low to the ground. The beds were OK, but the pillows and bedding were terrible. The condo was HOT - AC couldn't not be set below 72 and there wasn't a single fan anywhere. Day 3 we noticed ants (or something) coming in above the front door. We found an ant trap under the sink and put it out after killing the ones we could see. We woke up on our final day to find that all the food in the cabinets was infested and these bugs everywhere in the kitchen. This included all the travel snacks we'd prepared for our kids for the flight home. We called and a guy came with Ortho and was like "whoa, that's a bigger issue than I'm prepared for, I will be back". Checkout time came and went while we waited because we hadn't cleaned out the fridge our taken our trash out - but none of us wanted to touch anything until it was addressed. Then the lead cleaning gal came and was ridiculously rude about us being there and said "regardless, checkout was at 10...oh nice - you've left all the trash!"..
At that point we left, dropped our keys off and very quickly got a call from the office asking about the trash. The lady who called was at least sympathetic and polite, but needless to say it was not a great way to end our trip.
The location of this property is ideal, and perhaps other units there are in much better condition, but I would NEVER recommend a stay in unit 240.
